    Hurricane Irene Pounding Bahamas

Post  hurricanemaxi on Thu 25 Aug 2011, 9:10 am

Hurricane Irene, a Category 3 major storm, is “pounding” the Bahamas after gaining strength on a course that may take it near North Carolina this weekend and into southern New England early next week.

Irene’s top winds reached 120 miles (193 kilometers) per hour today as it churned 215 miles southeast of Nassau, according to a National Hurricane Center advisory at 5 p.m. It may reach Category 4 status with 135-mph winds tomorrow, the center said.

“We’re just watching it decimating Crooked Island of the Bahamas, Cat Island looks like it will be in the wheelhouse tonight and Eleuthera is just going to get smashed,” said Dave Samuel, a meteorologist with AccuWeather Inc. “Irene is a massive hurricane and that’s what’s so bad for the Bahamas. It is moving slow and it is huge.”

After Irene finishes with the Bahamas tomorrow, the storm is expected to arc north, passing over North Carolina’s Outer Banks and striking southern New England late Aug. 28 or early Aug. 29, according to the hurricane center track. The track is slightly west of where it was earlier today and closer to the East Coast. Forecast models show a wide variability in the possible track.

“They tend to shift from run to run, so I would not put too much emphasis on that right now, especially since we’re four days out,” said Jack Beven, senior hurricane specialist with the center in Miami, said by telephone. “That could shift 100 miles or more and probably will shift multiple times.”
